USEFUL TIPS
Moving can be a stressful event but it can be hassle free. Here are a few useful tips.
Four Weeks to Go to Move
Finalise the date of your move.

If possible avoid moving during busy times e.g. school holidays, bank holidays.
If you need storage space arrange it now.
If you are moving some distance and need to make arrangements for overnight accommodation organise it now.
Notify all Utility Services of moving date to ensure that accounts have been closed or transferred. This includes telephone company, electricity, gas, cable etc. It is advisable to do this well in advance of your moving date to avoid complications.
If you are in rented accommodation notify your landlord of your moving date.
Inform the gas and electricity suppliers that you are moving to a new property and make arrangements to have the meter read.
If you need to take leave from work, book it now.
Start clearing out unwanted rubbish.
Make a list of everyone who will need to know of your change of address.
Notify everyone of your change of address by mailing them a card or on-line message.
Check your home insurance. Make sure to arrange the transfer of your insurance to your new address in order to ensure that you are covered from the day you move in.
Decide whether or not you are going to move your appliances. Take into account their age and condition and whether or not they will fit into your new home.
If you haven’t already done so, register your children for school.
Make a list of all the items you want moved.
Two Weeks to Go
Start packing your non-essential items, remembering to leave out any clothes you may need.
If you have small children try to arrange for someone to look after them during your move.
Confirm with electricity/gas company the date for disconnection of services.
Advise your milkman, newspaper delivery service, window cleaner of the date to discontinue service or delivery.

One Week to Go
Arrange to pay your final bills.
If you are using a professional moving company make sure they have directions to your new property.
Make sure that all your boxes are labelled with the correct room and list of contents.
Put your important documentation such as passports, insurance certificates and driver licences in a safe place.
Pack a box with essential items to be last-on and first-off the moving van. The box should contain essential goods such as medications and first aid supplies as well as your kettle and some bathroom goods.
One Day to Go
Defrost the fridge/freezer.
Mark boxes containing any fragile items to be handled with care.
Inform the Gardaí if the property will be unoccupied for a time when you leave.
Walk through the house to make sure you have accounted for everything you need to move.
Make sure the house is clean for the new owners.
Moving Day
Unplug any appliances that are remaining in the property.
Have one last check through every room.
Ensure that the utility companies read the meter.
Close and lock all the doors and windows.
If you are using professional movers check their inventory list to make sure everything is included.
When you arrive at your New Home
Check that the appliances, heating and immersion are working.
When your furniture and belongings arrive check to make sure that they have not been damaged in transit.
